Hughenden to the Lynd

On reaching Hughenden we topped up with everything we needed and promptly left town, heading north again. The thin bitumen road wound its way toward the Lynd, intersecting at the Oasis roadhouse.

On the way, the road passes by Porcupine Gorge. When we reached this point we called into the lookout over the gorge. A thin line of water below cut it’s way through the imposing cliffs, lined with banks of trees. Nature in all it’s power and glory.

Other gorges ran along side the road but were less accessible. Thanks to the magic of the drone we were able to take a look at the distant landscape.

Further down the road the turn off to Blackbraes National Park beckoned us to turn down it. We obliged and followed the road. Coming to the ranger station it was obvious no one was about , so we made camp for the night on the front lawn. In the morning, we headed on to a camp ground further into the park. Emu swamp campground is just a mowed patch of ground next to the small lake.

As we were settling in we were surprised to see a vehicle with a camper trailer pull up, they went up the track a bit and set up. We spent the night there. Noticing on the map that there was a track going further on and eventually coming out back onto the main road to the Lynd, it was decided to go that way instead of backtracking. So, after following the track and exiting the park, we negotiated some cattle station tracks and came back on the road we were seeking. A very satisfying drive.
